Peter Foster Obliterates Global Warming in Road to Bali

Peter Foster, Columnist at Canada’s Financial Post, simply obliterates Global Warming in his piece entitled “Road to Bali”. In the very first paragraph Mr. Foster comes out swinging:

The fate of the Earth hangs in the balance in Bali, but the issue is not whether humanity will succumb to a “climate crisis,” or how the international community might craft a successor to the tattered Kyoto Accord (Let’s call it KyoTwo). The real theme of this United Nations gabfest — like that of its 12 predecessors, and of the hundreds, if not thousands, of related meetings –is whether globalization and trade liberalization will be allowed to continue, with a corresponding increase in wealth, health and welfare, or whether the authoritarian enemies of freedom (who rarely if ever recognize themselves as such) will succeed in using environmental hysteria to undermine capitalism and increase their Majesterium. Any successor to Kyoto will be rooted in hobbling rich economies, increasing the poor world’s resentment, unleashing environmental trade warfare, and blanketing the globe with rules and regulations that benefit only rulers and regulators. Bali is not about climate; it symbolizes the continued assault on freedom by those who seek — or pander to — political power under the guise of concern for humanity.

Awsome liberal pwnage; here’s my favorite excerpt:

Capitalism had once been the enemy because it was alleged to make people poor. Now it was the enemy because of the alleged side effects of making them rich.

And more:

Climate-change alarmism couldn’t be presented as simply a new justification for power-seeking, so it had to be cloaked–as social-ism has always been cloaked, both consciously and unconsciously — in concern for “the poor.” Addressing climate change has always been linked in the UN script with Third World development, even though it in fact represents the greatest threat to such development. Nevertheless, the prospect of more international redistribution has meant that poor countries’ corrupt and/or incompetent governments have become enthusiastic supporters of the Kyoto “process.”

I’m not sure I’ve ever read a more articulate and succinct written-piece calling Global Warming what it really is, veiled socialism on a grand scale.

Please read the entire article, It’s worth it.

Canadian Reporter Suspended for Praising War Effort in Afganistan

Reuters Canada:

Christine St-PierreOTTAWA (Reuters) - One of Canada's top television reporters has been suspended from her job for praising the country's increasingly troubled military mission in Afghanistan, the company said on Friday.

Christine St-Pierre, a veteran Ottawa correspondent for French-language public broadcaster Radio-Canada, wrote an open letter to Canada's 2,300 troops telling them to ignore mounting criticism of the mission.

Five Canadian soldiers were killed last weekend, prompting ever louder calls for Ottawa to review the mission. One opposition party wants the troops to come back next February, two years ahead of schedule.

"We owe you all our respect and our unfailing support … dear soldiers, your tears are not in vain, your tears are brave," St-Pierre wrote in the letter, which Montreal's La Presse newspaper published on Thursday.

Radio-Canada suspended her for breaching internal regulations that stipulate employees are not allowed to express their opinions on controversial issues.

Entire article (H/T: Allahpundit), Radio-Canada reporter hit for backing Afghan mission.

I grew up in Canada, so I know how liberal-minded the country is. Many Canadians view the Afghan conflict as America's war. In fact, a recent poll claims that a majority of Canadians blame American foreign policy for the terrorist attacks on 9/11. So why should they send troops to Afghanistan, right?

(Some American's react to the poll results.)

How different would the poll results have been had the terrorist plot, by militant islamists, to destroy several Canadian targets succeeded? Who's foreign policy would Canadians have blamed then? Anyone who blames a nation's foreign policy as having caused a terrorist attack is seriously misguided. The terrorists are the cause of the attack. Not the other way around.

Disagreeing with a nation's foreign policy does not give a rogue group of people the right to murder nearly 3000 innocent civilians. Terrorist groups like al-Qaeda do not represent a State  or foreign government. So they can not be held accountable for their actions in the traditional sense.

Furthermore, these people (the terrorists) made a conscious decision to use violence instead of petitioning their respective governments to raise grievances against the United States. Many governments in the middle east repress their constituents and when challenged, they simply deflect criticism by blaming the United States or Israel.

I think Christine St-Pierre did the right thing by praising the troops in harms way. Too few reporters and news agencies do that these days. It makes me wonder… would she have been suspended if she had criticized the mission instead? Probably not.

How Bush Derangement Syndrome Turns Good Writers into Bad Journalists

CBC News Viewpoint features an attack piece written by the Canadian columnist, Heather Mallick, in which she more or less complains about, then attacks certain older men in positions of power having turned bad. Early in the piece she takes a swipe at the usual liberal media targets: Dick Cheney, George Bush and Tony Blair. Older men like Dick Cheney, she implores, was born vile and honed that quality for a lifetime.

However, the focus of her article is John McCain, and his fall from being a real man to an utter child in which, of course, George Bush et al are to blame. Ms. Mallick also takes a childish swipe at Tony Blair. In fact, just about every mention of one of her subjects is childish in nature. Which is completely ironic because she criticizes them for the same behaviour.

Ms. Mallick displays a classic case of Bush Derangement Syndrome (BDS). Which nearly always turns an otherwise reasonable columnist into a terribly bad, childish writer.

Blogging from Canada

This week I am blogging from Canada, my home and native land. I'm an American citizen, but was born and raised in Canada about 45 minutes south-west of Toronto. In addition to the typical blogging, I'll be watching the Canadian news media to see how they report on such events as the Israel-Iran confrontation, stem-cell research and news that makes it into Canadian media from south of the border.

Update (July 30th, 2006):

There really wasn't a whole lot to blog about this week other than the usual anti-American bias that's present in most newspapers and television networks. Having grown up here, media bias has been present for as long as I can remember.

I believe the anti-American sentiment stems from a deep-seeded inferiority complex that Canadians have concerning their neighbors to the south.

Canadians Giving Political Assylum to AWOL U.S. Soldiers?

Another move straight out of the Vietnam playbook…

In this AP article its author, Carolyn Thompson, writes about Canada’s open door policy toward AWOL U.S. soldiers who are referred to as “war resistors”. However, Thompson casually touches on the fact that the Canadian government is denying political asylum to U.S. soldiers seeking it.

A group of American military deserters publicly embraced their new lives in Canada on Saturday with the support of “peace mom” Cindy Sheehan, who said she wished the son she lost in Iraq was among them.

“I begged him not to go to Iraq,” the anti-war activist said through tears at a rally in support of the former soldiers, who wore black T- shirts emblazoned with “AWOL.” “And I wish he was standing up here with these people because he didn’t want to go.”

There’s a hint of sarcasm in the title of this post because I’m certain that not all Canadians support the idea of deserting U.S. troops clamoring [sarcasm again] into the country.

Terrorism North of the Border Update

A story mentioned in one of my earlier posts has developed very quickly. Just about every news account and blog report has its own angle on the story.

One thing is crystal clear; Canada is not immune to terrorism. Many Canadians, my own friends and family included, felt that their country’s abstention from the war in Iraq precluded them from the dangers of Global Jihad. As it turns out this is simply not the case.

Here’s a quick rundown on what the mainstream news media are saying:

(CBS/AP):

Canada Plot Allegedly Involved PM Attack

At least one member of a group of terror suspects plotted to storm Canada’s parliament and behead officials, including the prime minister, if Muslim prisoners in Canada and Afghanistan were not released, according to charges made public Tuesday.

Toronto (AP):

Canadian Terror Probe Expands to 7 Nations

Police said Monday more arrests are likely in an alleged plot to bomb buildings in Canada, while intelligence officers sought ties between the 17 suspects and Islamic terror cells in the United States and five other nations.

Ontario (AP):

Canada Police Use Sting in Terror Arrests

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police itself delivered three tons of potential bomb-making material to a group that authorities said wanted to launch a string of attacks inspired by al-Qaida, according to a news report Sunday.

The Toronto Star said the sting unfolded when investigators delivered the ammonium nitrate to the group of Muslim Canadians, then moved in quickly on what officials called a homegrown terror ring.

Buffalo, NY (AP):

Terror Suspects Arrested in U.S. Last Year

Two men believed to be part of a terrorist ring in Canada were arrested last summer while trying to smuggle guns and ammunition from the United States, authorities said.

Mohammed Dirie, 22, and Yasin Abdi Mohamed, 24, were both in jail serving two-year sentences for weapons smuggling when they were hit with new Canadian terrorism charges Friday.

(The Toronto Star):

Plot began in chat room

…So when a shadowy group of disaffected urban youth began talking in an Internet chat room in the fall of 2004 espousing anti-Western views, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service was listening.

The spy agency, and an alphabet soup of other security agencies across the continent, closely monitor such sites, where talk may sometimes turn to buildings and bombs and bringing global jihad home to North America, to Canada.

Ontario (AP):

Imam: Canada Suspects Didn’t Seek Violence

Several members of a suspected terrorist ring prayed daily at a storefront mosque in a middle-class city west of Toronto but never spoke of hurting others, one of their prayer leaders said.

“I will say that they were steadfast, religious people. There’s no doubt about it. But here we always preach peace and moderation,” Qamrul Khanson, an imam at the one-room Al-Rahman Islamic Center for Islamic Education, said Sunday.

Canadian Press (via Yahoo! News):

Terrorism threat becomes reality for Canadians as cops allege homegrown plot

TORONTO (CP) - The lingering threat of global terrorism became a concrete reality for Canadians on Saturday following allegations that 17 people plotted an imminent attack with three times the explosive material used in the devastating Oklahoma City bombing.

A bag of ammonium nitrate was displayed by police as they revealed that an “inspired by al-Qaida” group of mostly Canadian citizens had amassed three tonnes of the fertilizer - commonplace in backyard gardens but also used in large quantities to make explosives for deadly ends.

“It was their intent to use it for a terrorist attack,” RCMP assistant commissioner Mike McDonell said of the homegrown plot to target unspecified institutions throughout southern Ontario.

When the news of the terror-raid broke, the blogosphere lit up all over the Web:
